I use a whip finish tool for finishing and have found that if you apply a small amount of varnish to thread before you whipfinish you do not clog up the eye of hook or spoil hackles so no need for fiddling about with a needle.
I hope that this tip is of use

Hi Dave

The video was excellent. I have been fly tying for a number of years and believe you never stop learning. I have struggled with the legs for a long time and as I am getting a bit long in the tooth these days, it is not getting any easier but the method with the needle makes it a lot better.

I was interested to learn what fly a visitor to the reservoir had caught a rainbow trout on. He showed me and in my box I found a tarnished gold head Daddy Longlegs with a slight touch of lime green thread tied in just on the bend of the hook. I tackled up on floating line and 12 feet of leader and cast as far as I could get and into the white froth, letting the fly sink. Fish were taking the trout on the drift and I ended up with a 7 fish bag. One or two chaps were snapped , losing their Dawson's Olives. The weather by the way was fairly strong NW with varying cloud and sunny patches!

I have been reservoir fishing for over thirty years and more recently have been tying lures and some flies. I came on this site to find out how to tie the crane fly. I have been knotting the legs individually and they end out streaming behind the fly locked together. You have shown me that by tying two together the legs separate. Thoroughly good video and many thanks for the instruction.
